Integrated mycotoxin management system in the feed supply chain

A very interesting review article by a group of Italian researchers Fumagalli, Ottoboni, Pinotti, and Cheli, titled Integrated Mycotoxin Management System in the Feed Supply Chain: Innovative Approaches, was published in the journal Toxins in the fall of 2021. Toxins 2021, 13, 572. (https://doi.org/10.3390/toxins 13080572), on an integrated mycotoxin management system in the feed supply chain.

Abstrakt

In it, the authors write that exposure to mycotoxins is a worldwide problem, as their occurrence is virtually unavoidable and their profile varies by geographic region. The presence of mycotoxins can adversely affect the productivity and quality of livestock production, and act as risk factors for human health. A feed can be contaminated simultaneously with several species of fungi and the mycotoxins they produce. The co-occurrence of different mycotoxins, and the presence of modified mycotoxins (so-called masked mycotoxins) and newly discovered mycotoxins are at the center of modern mycotoxin research.

Prevention of mold and mycotoxin contamination is almost impossible. Therefore, it is necessary for producers to implement a comprehensive mycotoxin risk management program to minimize these risks in the animal feed supply chain from a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) System perspective.

The article proposes an innovative integrated system for dealing with mycotoxins in the feed chain, with an emphasis on novel mycotoxin control strategies. Specific and selected technologies, such as nanotechnologies and management protocols, are identified as promising and sustainable options for implementing mycotoxin control, prevention, and management. Further research should focus on methods for testing samples contaminated simultaneously with multiple masked and newly discovered mycotoxins. The possibility of changes in the profile of mycotoxins occurring in the farm-to-table chain due to climate change, and the emergence of fungal species and mycotoxins not previously observed in different regions of the world, was highlighted.
